Entrepreneur Mark Sowerby inspires Cairns school children
MORE than 100 Cairns school students were reminded success was not dependent on exam marks after a visit by some of Australia’s biggest entrepreneurs.
Blue Sky Alternative Investments founder and Queensland chief entrepreneur Mark Sowerby, Shark Tank personality Steve Baxter and Orange Sky Laundry founder Lucas Patchett addressed a group at a Business Liasion Association breakfast yesterday at Rydges Esplanade.
Mr Sowerby was on the final leg of a statewide tour to spotlight regional start-ups.
The 45-year-old former owner of a capital investment business worth more than $500 million described himself as a “waste of space” who had no direction until his early 30s.
“If anyone I went to school with asked if I’d do anything with my life, they’d categorically say no,” he said.
“You shouldn’t box yourself in, you don’t know when you’re going to mature.”
St Mary’s Catholic College Year 10 student Mia Gordon was inspired by Mr Sowerby’s recollection of his English Channel swim.
“It was amazing to hear how far he could push himself,” she said.
“What I admire about entrepreneurs is that they are courageous, creative and innovative.”
Smithfield State High School Year 12 student Kurt Kenny said he shared a lot in common with the Blue Sky founder.
“His advice was to achieve what you are comfortable with, and know your strengths and limitations,” she said.
Mr Sowerby also met with local business owners on Thursday night at The Space.
